CHECKLIST
FOR YOUR DOWNSIZING MOVE

  • Check with family members if they would like certain items.
  • Declutter before you start trying to pack.
  • Book a council cleanup for broken furniture and other items to be discarded.
  • Work room by room so it's not so overwhelming.
  • Book charity pickups giving them plenty of notice and ready with a list of what they'll be taking.
  • If there is a large amount of personal paperwork, book a shredding service.
  • Organise your removalist with at least 4 weeks notice if possible and ask if they have a different day hourly rate - it can be cheaper to move earlier in the week.
  • Purchase the packing supplies including boxes, paper and tape, making sure you have enough large boxes for trays/saucepans /small lamps etc.
  • When packing, do this in order of least used first. For example, start with photos, books and ornaments.
  • The last box you pack should be your box labelled 'open first' at the new home. Include a plate, cup, cutlery set, tea towel, toilet paper, snacks, hand soap, any daily medication, phone charger.
